A Nossa Terra Annual General Meeting

The association invites all the associates to participate in the general meeting, which is scheduled to Saturday, 20th February, 2 p.m., at the Óchálá, in Monchique.
The general meeting purpose is to discuss and organize the activities for this year.
NOTE: The Óchálá will open exceptionally on the 20th, from one p.m. until the end of the meeting.

Mapping invasive species

After the AGM there will be a practical session about the use of a smartphone app “Invasoras” for mapping invasive species in Portugal. At this time of year acacia are in bloom and are easier to locate.

2nd Camellia Festival in Monchique

The Monchique’s town hall organizes the 2nd Camellia festival, which will take place on the 19th, 20th and 21st February, at the São Sebastião park.
To celebrate the beauty and the importance of camellias in Monchique, the festival will launch a recreational photography contest on the 20th.

Participation at the Seminar about Mining Conflicts in Portugal and Brazil, by the Coimbra’s University

The association participated in a seminar about mining conflicts that exist in Portugal and Brazil.
“This event will discuss aspects of the population’s struggles related by mining in Portugal and Brazil, and the different ways to say “no” to these projects, by sharing experiences and building knowledge between academics, activists, associations and social movements”.
The seminar will take place on February 2nd, at the Social Studies Centre at the University of Coimbra.

“Descobrir os Oceanos” (finding the oceans) Contest

The company “Formato Verde”, with the ALGAR support will promote a national contest – “Descobrir os Oceanos”, to all the students from Basic and High school education.
The challenge is to write an original and creative script, based on at least one of the seven principles of the ocean’s literacy.
The four best scripts will be illustrated by national and international artists in a Comic Book.

2015/2016 Water Monitoring Program in Monchique

The hydrologic year started on October 1st 2015. Since most streams are not permanent, the water sampling programmes takes place in spring, between February and July.
The first sampling session will be on Monday 22 February in the Ribeira de Monchique. From then on, the planned dates are 20 March (Ribeira de Monchique, south), 28 March (Ribeira das Cercas); 11 April (Ribeira de Seixe); 16 May (tributaries of the Ria do Alvor); 6 June (Rio Arade).

Registration of association

The association is again recognised on the national register of non-governmental environmental associations (Aviso nº 1012/2016 no Diário da República). This gives it charitable status and recognition for planning purposes.

Our next Transition Group monthly meeting will take place on Sunday, 21st February, 2 p.m., at the Bica-Boa.
